Paint Mines, Co: Quick Tips

Who knew this little gem was so close to Colorado Springs! The Paint mines include 4 miles of hiking trails through breathtaking spires and hoodoos (a column or pinnacle of weathered rock). These formations came to be through years of erosion, exposing the colorful layers of clay and jasper underneath. The rich color, caused by oxidized Iron compounds has been used for centuries by Native Americans for brick building, Pottery & Paint.

BEST TIME TO VISIT:

Although this park is open year round, I would suggest going during the Spring & Fall to beat the heat of the summer and avoid the harsh winter elements. In terms of time of day, Dawn & Dusk will be the best times to see the colors of the mines really glow!

PARK INFO:

There are two main parking areas, the first has a restroom building and an established lot for visitors, but requires a longer hike to reach the large structures. The second, has quicker access to the large formations in the park but does not have a restroom building. Entrance to the park is FREE.

DRIVING DISTANCE:

From Denver: 2H

From Colorado Springs: 45m

RULES & RESTRICTIONS:

No Pets, horses, bikes or Drones. No Climbing on the spires or hoodoos.

**Always remember to Leave No Trace, pack out your trash & leave parks and open spaces better than you found it!
